Warsteiner 2002 Ti

Words & photos - Daniel Bevis

This 1973 BMW 2002 Ti bristles with 'Huh, you don't say...' titbits. Those Warsteiner decals are all hand-painted. It's road legal, despite being in full race-car spec. It was driven by Jochen Mass at last year's 72nd Members' Meeting at Goodwood. It has brilliantly strange wheels. It is, in short, a very cool car indeed.

In fact, I was so taken with it that I sorted a full feature on it for BMW Car magazine... at least, I nearly did. Unfortunately, after much initial enthusiasm from the owner, the trail went cold and it never happened. But still, here are some inexpertly-snapped shots from my own lens for you. That'll have to do.

Mass, by all accounts, loved driving the car - he put in a 1m36s lap in qualifying, stepped out with a smile, and said 'This is the time for the car. It is good, ja? I'm going for a cigar.' Along with co-driver Simon Diffey, they brought it home to 8th place in a grid of 30 cars, taking 1st-in-class. A very impressive little motor.

More from 72MM here.
