600 Pullman 'Long-Top'

Words & photos - Daniel Bevis

This colossal, dictator-spec Merc has a suitably enormous name: Mercedes-Benz 600 Pullman Presidential 'Long-Top' Landaulet. As most of these behemoths do, this one has a famous name on the title, having been specced from new by Josep Broz Tito, former President of Yugoslavia.
In fact, just ten of the 'Long-Top' variants were built, its unfeasibly lengthy cabriolet roof revealing a leather-clad interior big enough to house a whole cabinet of thirsty ministers, helping themselves to whisky from the crystal decanters and... well, no, that's not actually true, is it? Look at the foldaway seats behind the middle set of doors, they're rubbish. You can really only fit four people inside with any degree of comfort, and that includes the driver. Still, the car makes a hell of a statement, doesn't it? And that statement could well be 'I am a man who never needs to parallel park, or find a space outside Sainsbury's'...
