Morgan Plus 8 Speedster

Words & photos - Daniel Bevis

Built to commemorate a hundred years of manufacture at Malvern Link, the Plus 8 Speedster takes the already impressive Plus 8 and strips the thing right to the bone. The upright windscreen is gone, replaced by a Perspex wraparound screen; there's a pair of roll hoops behind the seats, and each corner wears a purposeful black wheel that, although looking like a utilitarian steel rim, is actually a beautifully crafted 18" alloy. The electric blue accents around the wing beading and trim detail suggest that all is not as it seems with this Plus 8, while the crackles and pops from the side pipes serve to reinforce the aggression. And all cars should rock from side to side when you blip the throttle, right...?
The Speedster will only appear in a limited run of sixty units, costing £69,995. It shares the regular Plus 8's 4.8-litre BMW V8 - so you're looking down the thick end of 367bhp, 155mph, and 0-60mph in 4.5s - while it also gets paddle-shift, a first for a Morgan.

SuckSqueezeBangBlow was lucky enough to blag a ride up the revered Goodwood hillclimb in the Speedster at this year's Festival of Speed, and can assure you first-hand that the car's a real crowd-pleaser! The Spitfire-like staccato crackles from the exhausts raised whoops and cheers from the fans, and it's quite a feeling to have tens of thousands of people simultaneously giving you a smile and a thumbs-up. If you want to feel like a rock star, this is the car for you. Forget spending your £70k on an anonymous basic-spec 911 - the Speedster will buy you a lot more exclusivity, and be quicker too...
