Ford Mustero

Words & pictures - Daniel Bevis

What do you get if you cross a Mustang GT350 with a Ranchero pickup? Er, this...
The GT350, often nicknamed the 'Cobra Mustang' thanks to an enthusiastic Shelby tie-in, was a lusty and desirable brute with a 310bhp, 4.7-litre V8, a heavy-duty Galaxie rear axle (in place of the stock Falcon one) and a race car attitude. This particular one is apparently an original 1966 Beverly Hills Mustero conversion, although there's some ambiguity as to whether these were actually a Ford-sanctioned 1960s conversion or an aftermarket 1970s job... whatever the truth is, it's a beautifully executed chop, and unquestionably something of a headturner. And just for fun, this one doesn't actually have GT350 running gear after all - it has a 5.4-litre stroker motor with 463bhp. Fruity.
