Willment Escort

Words & photos - Daniel Bevis

This mkI Escort RS1600 formed part of Motorsport at the Palace's Class of '71 rolling exhibit. In the 1971 Osram Saloon Car Championship, it was driven to second place at Crystal Palace by Mike Crabtree; the brutal BDA-powered racer actually passed the chequered flag in first place after a long and bloody battle with Gerry Marshall and Martin Thomas, but was penalised for a supposed jump start and knocked back into second. Hey, that's racing...
The car is today owned by Willem Koppelman, who runs and maintains the car in period spec and livery. And rightly so - the combination of the Willment dealer stripes over those bubble arches, the deep-dished Minilites, and that oh-so-cool Racing Services cam cover equates to something very desirable indeed. Period perfect.
