Renault 8

Words & photos - Daniel Bevis

There's a lot to love about the Renault 8. It's got an engine in the boot, it's styled to look like a pile of biscuit tins (I mean this in a positive way, it's a fantastic looking pile), it's got motorsport heritage in spades, and it's one of those cars that seems to put a smile on everybody's face, regardless of their own interest or otherwise in old cars. It's an offshoot of the 2CV effect, people just seem to like them.

This one is particularly likeable; not only does it feature racy stripes and Gordini lamps, but there's a juicy set of twin carbs complementing that four-branch manifold, some oh-so-retro GT-badged alloys, a purposeful looking bike exhaust strapped laterally across the tail, and a general feeling that it would kick all sorts of arse on the track. Oh, and there's an old-school 'Keep Your Distance!' sticker, natch.

You see it here parked alluring next to a colour-coded toilet block (ahem) at Motorsport at the Palace 2014. Click here for more.
