Players Datsun 520

Words & photos - Daniel Bevis

The brilliance of this build is that everybody expects the Players crew to be solely focused on nu-wave Audis & VWs; what Jay McToldridge and Carl Taylor have proved here - as they did with their pair of E36 BMWs - is that they're very keen to surprise people. The idea pool is seemingly limitless, and a Datsun 520 pickup works perfectly as an ambassador for their brand because it's so very unexpected.
The '66 pickup wears a little natural patina, but has been thoroughly reworked beneath the skin, most notably in the bed at the rear: it's been unceremoniously filleted, with a custom AirLift setup exposed for the world to see as the little truck lowers its frame to the tarmac. It's a properly sophisticated arrangement too, with a four-linked, rose-jointed axle, along with four-gallon air tanks and Viair 380C compressors mated to AirLift Dominator Series airbags. The retro signwriting and Chevrolet steel wheels complete the old-skool look for the time being, although future plans apparently include a full body-off resto with crazy paint and Nissan Bluebird 1800 Turbo SSS running gear. Sounds promising!
