Stealthy(ish) mkI Astra

Words & photos - Daniel Bevis

You don't see a lot of mkI Astras these days. And when you do, they're generally either GTEs or GTE replicas - and always white. So it's refreshing to see this one - an obscure booted saloon rather than the more commonly spotted hatchback, no less - in a retro shade of China Blue, looking markedly fit for competition. The eagle-eyed among you will have spotted a few touches that go beyond the usual Astra treatment; that agressive rear diffuser, the five-stud hubs, the big disc brakes all round, the jutting front splitter... well, all is not as it seems with this ol' Vauxhall. In fact, beneath that stock-ish shell hides the engine and running gear from a Subaru Impreza, which is pretty barmy. I'm informed by Jarkle at Total Vauxhall mag that they'll be featuring it later in the year, so keep an eye out.

Spotted at Apex 2014 - more photos here.
