Kamei Golf

Words & photos - Daniel Bevis

Mike Flynn's mkI Golf is a real labour of love. Taking inspiration from the revered Berg Cup series, it fuses period-correct (and sunshine-hued) livery with boisterous competition intent. The car began life as a 1.3 Driver, and found itself fitted with a 2.1-litre TSR engine - the first in a long line of modifications that can only really be described as 'getting a bit carried away'. The shell was fully stripped down, a rollcage welded in, Berg Cup arches added and the whole lot sprayed in classic Kamei colours. (That's right, sprayed - it's no easy-option sticker job, but hours upon hours of painstaking masking...)
The Golf, now completed to an eat-your-dinner-off-it standard, is a show scene regular, and will soon be featured in Retro Cars magazine. SuckSqueezeBangBlow spotted it at the 2014 Apex Festival, where it was stretching its legs on track and sounding superb - you can see more photos here.
