Denim Splittie

Words & photos - Daniel Bevis

There are a number of different approaches that you can take with a splitscreen VW camper - rat, concours, race bus, period commercial... and this one sits within the popular niche of being weathered and timeworn but a little way short of rat-look. The exterior wears a few decades of patina, but the shell is fundamentally straight and solid. All of the scene-correct details are in place - panscraping stance, polished five-spokes, roof-rack with obligatory retro gubbins - but it's when you peer inside that you discover this splittie's unique hook: it's entirely upholstered in denim. Old jeans and skirts have been artfully stitched together to form seat covers, doorcards, luggage shelves and curtains; also, the floor's tiled and the table's a dartboard. Splendid!
