'E-Type' Kadett E

Words & photos - Daniel Bevis

This isn't really the sort of car you expect to see at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. It's also wilfully confusing to the casual car enthusiast - known over here as the mkII Vauxhall Astra, this retro hot hatch is an Opel Kadett E GSI; what's more, the owner, Jens Drebenstedt, has built it with a Lotus theme, and dubbed it 'E-Type'. Baffled? There's more...

If you look past the smattering of old-skool Max Power themes (the custom subwoofer install, for example), you'll see a dedicated and detailed build - Jens has been working on this since 2000, and it's flawless. The chromed C20XE runs forged pistons and custom sequential injection, while that floor-hugging stance is thanks to an air-ride system. The Recaros are trimmed in leather, acting as a metaphor for the car's overall dichotomy of performance and luxurious appointments. And anything that physically can be polished offers a shine you can see your smile in. Thoroughly impressive throughout.
