St. James's Concours 2013

Words & photos - Daniel Bevis

I was actually rather glad that it rained torrentially on the St. James's Concours yesterday. Having been burned to a crisp at Salon Privé on Wednesday, it was rather nice to wander down the Mall for SuckSqueezeBangBlow's second concours of the week amongst golf ball-sized raindrops. And while the overall aesthetic of the display on the lawn may not have been exactly to the organisers' liking, with (from what I overheard) £15k-worth of hurriedly-erected gazebos protecting the more precious exhibits, you can't argue that these machines look rather magnificent with a few litres of weather dripping from them.

Entrants were wonderfully diverse, from Carrozzeria Touring's sensational Disco Volante (based on the Alfa 8C Competizione) to the multiple Goodwood Revival champion Ferrari 250 GTO Scaglietti; a patinated and original Bugatti Type 35B to Eagle's all-new Low Drag E-Type...
The (ex-Saddam Hussein!) Erdmann & Rossi-bodied Mercedes-Benz and the Figoni & Falaschi Delahaye Torpedo provided a touch of art deco swishiness, while the Bentley Boys were well represented by Dr. Benjafield's imposing old lorry. And there was plenty more besides.
As always, there will be many, many SSBB features in the coming days and weeks looking at some of the highlights from the concours; it'll all be mixed in with the fabulous metal from Salon Privé, just to keep you on your toes. Ooh, and it's the Revival next weekend...
