Hurst Floor Shifter Special - Goodwood FoS 2011

Smokey Yunick, proprietor of The Best Damn Garage in Town, built this Indy 500 racer in 1964. Designed like a catamaran, the driver sat in a remote side-pod while the 4.1-litre, 4-cylinder Offenhauser engine resided in the main trunk of the car. Unfortunately this bizarre racer never saw victory at Indianapolis, with Bobby Johns crashing backwards into a barrier during early practice. But as you can see, it's now been restored to its original glory... and what a machine it is. Those obscene ram-pipes, the fabulous black-and-gold colour scheme, the way the driver's been tacked onto the side as an afterthought - superb.
