Alfa Romeo 4C

Words & photos: Daniel Bevis

The covers came off the Alfa Romeo 4C concept at Geneva back in 2011. Carrying the core values of the brand - performance, style and technical excellence - into a dinky sports car package, its name is a mission statement: it's a more compact, bite-sized 8C. Right?

There's a four-cylinder engine mounted amidships; a turbocharged 1750cc unit offering 240bhp. The genius of the car is in its power-to-weight ratio; being constructed largely from carbon-fibre and aluminium - including a hypercar-style carbon tub - it weighs a mere 4kg-per-horsepower (around 895kg in all), giving 268bhp-per-tonne. The twin-clutch transmission and sophisticated suspension mean it's a true circuit tool as well as B-road blaster. Being mid-engined, rear-wheel drive, lightweight, beautiful, and comparatively economical, Alfa's 4C is pretty much the perfect sports car in most respects. When they go public, they're going to sell like hot panettone.
