Volvo's collision detection system... doesn't work

They were the first manufacturer to install seatbelts as standard, they made a lot of fuss about their clever SIPS system - Volvo are a safe pair of hands. When they announce a new innovation in passenger safety, you can pretty much expect it to become industry standard in no time. Collision detection system? Sure, why not?

What you don't expect is for a new system to fail in a demonstration before the world's media. Volvo certainly didn't. Their explanation: 'had a human been driving, he or she would have noticed the system was not operating correctly'. Um... isn't that what the system's for, to spot things that the driver hasn't?
