Turbonique drag-axles

Imagine if there was something you could bolt to your car that would allow you to run the standard engine when you wanted to be sensible, but at the flick of a switch would provide an extra thousand-or-so horsepower. The stuff of crazy dreams? Well, it actually happened in the sixties.

Turbonique's system basically consisted of a rocket-powered turbine mounted to the rear axle, supplying power on demand via a second driveshaft. This excellent post from the always-informative Retro Scene mag has all the info.

The below period press ad shows what they were promising... but presumably you'd want to do something about your tyres and brakes at the very least rather than leaving your Chevy 'stock', right?
